Ozone / Oxidative Therapy for Nail Fungus

For many years now Ozone has been used for Treating Nail Fungus. Few people are even aware this process is even available.

Scientists have proven the potent antifungal activity against onychomycosis (nail fungus) in laboratory conditions and producing ozonised ointments for fungal infections as a result.

The problem is to trap the ozone into a topical ointment as ozone is an very unstable molecule.

The key to this therapy in a practical solution is to get the ozone in contact with the fungal nail infection. One technique is explained below.

Although not as well known, oxidative therapies have been used extensively in hospitals to treat a wide range of health problems ranging for contaminated wounds, burns and infections, including diseases and cancers.

Many cities also purify their drinking water with ozone because of it ability and safeness to kill bacteria and fungus.

This technique also works well for treating contaminated items such as your sweaty shoes as pictured below.

How is Ozone Made?

Man-made ozone is a relatively simple process where dry air containing oxygen is drawn into an ozone generator and charged with high voltage. The air is made up of diatomic oxygen (O2) and nitrogen (N2).

The high voltage splits some oxygen molecules into oxygen atoms as the air is drawn through the ozone generator. Some of these atoms then quickly react with oxygen molecules to form ozone (03).

How Does Ozone Work to Cure Nail Fungus?

  • Oxidation using oxygen is based on the idea that it breaks down and eliminates toxins from the body by burning them through a process of oxidation.
  • As ozone is unstable the third oxygen atom breaks free. If this free molecule comes into contact with the fungus oxidation occurs and damages the fungus as a result.

Therefore success of this treatment process relies on the free ozone atom coming into contact with the fungus.

So How Do You Trap Ozone Around The Fungus?

A technique to cure nail fungus is called “bagging.” This technique is simply done by placing the infected fingers in a plastic bag that has been filled with ozone gas generated by an ozone machine.

This process works on the same principles as soaking your nails in a solution for a period of time each day.

This technique is becoming quite uncommon now as better treatments are available. Ozone gas does give off a bit of a smell and it is advised not to inhale the ozone rich gas.

Other items, such as your shoes, can also be treated this way by placing them in a bag. Another method is to purchase an ozone machine and treat your shoes as below.

Treating your work boots, or any shoe that you wear frequently, will help to aid to cure your nail fungus quicker.

Fungal spores can inhabit your shoes for a long time living off the keratin of sheded skin. Each time you put your shoe back on you are increases the chances of a reinfection.

Ugg boots are particularly bad, especially polyester lined. The carpet type lining within the ugg boot doesn’t allow your foot to breath.

Your feet sweat, naturally shed skin, and now this dark environment is perfect for fungal growth, and reinfection.

By using an ozone machine I treated my shoes once a week for half an hour. The pictures above. Even though I used ZetaClear I still treated my shoes as I wore my leather work boots for 10-12 hours a day.

I wasn’t sure if the ozone would help but I did notice that my shoes stopped smelling. I was confident then that something was happening.
